Green gave way to darknessâ¦and it was in that moss-colored abyss I foundâ¦herâ¦my mother. Flashes filled me, fragments of memories that were not my own. My motherâs laughter floated to me, and a rush of exhilaration followed.
âMother?â I whispered as a wave of warmth washed over me.
But before I could grab hold of that feeling, it was goneâ¦
âThrough here,â my sister urged as her hand tugged me forward, out of the darkness and into the light, and as my eyes adjusted to the bright glare of the sun, I realized we werenât in the mountain anymore.
We werenât anywhere I knew.
We stood in the middle of a town, but the streets were empty and silent. There were no sounds of laughter from children playing, no sound of anything at all. I lifted my gaze to the top of the nearby tavern and the thatched roofs that stretched beyond. There was no whisper of smoke from the chimneys, not a breath of acrid tang in the air. There was silenceâ¦
There was death.
The faint touch lingered, pressing down on me as I stood next to my sister. I turned, to find her gaze fixed on a courtyard in the distance. Her breath was slow, eyes unmoving. âWhat is it?â
âI know this place,â Ever murmured, and took a step forward.
âFrom a dream?â
She shook her head. âNoâ¦more than that. Iâve been hereâ¦I dreamed about it and it called me.â
She left me there and moved toward the shadows that spilled from the tavern building. I followed, kicking the hardened dirt, gouged and marked from the years of horses and carriages. The closer Ever came to that courtyard, the more death seemed to close around me.
The faint cry of a child carried on the wind. But there was no childâ¦not here, or now. And there hadnât been for a long time. I knew life and death more than most people. I felt that absence even more as Ever stepped into the gloom of the courtyard. I followed, my heart thundering in my chest, and as I stepped into the entrance, I caught sight of a towering black rock.
The stoneâ¦
The words thrummed inside me. Her stone. I turned my head to watch Ever as she advanced. She lifted her hand as she came closer, fingers outstretched like she reached for someone familiar. Energy pulsed behind me, sending a thunderous boom quaking through the air.
I stopped and turned my head as the Hexers began to tumble out of nowhere and into the street, in the same place weâd stood just seconds ago. It was the silver-haired male that came through the portal first. His eyes were wild, just like his name. He stumbled forward and came to a stop, scanning the empty street until he found me, then his gaze shifted to the woman he loved.
I didnât need him to say the words. I could see the truth in his eyes. So much desperation. So much pain. âEver!â he called, and rushed forward.
Darkness descended with a rush as the silver-haired Hexer rushed toward my sister.
